"This is our favourite place in the whole world. So special" (May 07)
Attractions
Westnewton Estate lies inside the Northumberland National Park at the heart of the spectacular scenery of the north Cheviot hills. It is an ideal area for walking and cycling and there are many walks possible from the cottages.
If you just fancy a gentle stroll or a full day out for a more strenuous exploration of the high hills, including the Cheviot itself, then this is the place to be. Books on walking in the area and maps are provided in the cottages for you to borrow.
More information can be found by clicking the links on this page.
Look out for the local wildlife. Deer, badgers, foxes and bats are but a few of the characters you may see. There is a huge variety of birdlife here too from the common to the more rare. You will be sure to see the heron which lives on the stream and the barn owl at dusk.
Try your hand at catching your dinner..! While staying at the cottages you will have fishing rights to our own private stretch of the River Bowmont which feeds the river Till.
One evening in January 2005 there was a spectacular display of the Northern Lights and one of our guests was able to capture this photograph of the aurora over the cottages.
Famous local artist Peter Podmore works from his studio at Westnewton.
Drawing mainly in pastels and charcoal but also painting in oils and acrylics Peter works between the spectacular Northumberland coastline and the Cheviot Hills.
Peter's studio is in a converted farm building on the estate and you are welcome to knock on his door. It is Peter's work you will see hanging in the cottages.
Northumberland and the Borders are steeped in history. Alnwick Castle with its famous gardens and Bamburgh Castleare an easy drive from the cottages as is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. You will need to check the tide times here.
Closer to the cottages you can see examples of prehistoric hill forts, thousands of years old yet only a short walk away.
One of our regular visitors has a web site which looks at these ancient sites and gives details of walks.
The Borders Gliding Club fly every weekend, weather permitting, from the airfield at nearby Milfield.
For a reasonable price you can book an Air Experience flight and soar above the Cheviots at 2000ft.
